I’m leaving my job and want to know if my boss has to give me a job reference and if he does give me one, what must it include?

Your boss has no legal obligation to give you a reference but if he chooses to, it will be on his terms. So it could be so vague as to make it rather useless, or he could impose terms on its use so that you are now allowed to see it. But any reference he does give must be factually correct because he has a duty to provide a reference which is not incorrect or misleading. Inaccurate or misleading statement in a job reference can give the ex-employee, and sometimes his or her new employer, a valid claim for compensation.
